The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has responded to a petition filed in the Delhi High Court seeking the cancellation of its official recognition as a political party. In a statement issued today, the NDPP described the allegations raised by the petitioner as baseless and without merit.

The party’s statement comes after media reports revealed that the petitioner, Zeneisilie Ate Loucii, a resident of Zhadima Village in Kohima district, had filed a petition under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, in May 2018. According to Nagaland Page, the petition had initially sought the cancellation of NDPP’s registration, with a hearing on the case scheduled for December 11, 2024.

The petition alleges that the NDPP obtained its registration fraudulently by filing false affidavits from its president, three general secretaries, and 11 members, in violation of the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) guidelines. It claims that 27 individuals submitted false affidavits under oath, swearing they were not members of any other political party. The petitioner’s counsel, Abhishek Singhvi, reportedly provided a chart detailing the names of these 27 individuals.

However, the NDPP clarified that this is not a new case but a matter dating back to 2018, when the same petitioner had filed a complaint with the ECI based on identical allegations. “The ECI, after thorough deliberation and verification, had dismissed the case in 2019 as the allegations held no merit,” the NDPP statement read.

The party highlighted its success since its formation in 2017, pointing out that ”the NDPP has won two General Elections in the State as well as two elections for the lone Lok Sabha seat.” Additionally, the NDPP mentioned its clean sweep of Urban Local Body (ULB) elections across the state and victories in all bye-elections since 2018. ”The issue of de-recognition or de-registration now does not hold any water since the NDPP is a registered and recognized political party under the ECI, which is the sole authority in registering and recognizing political parties in India,” the statement emphasized.

Regarding the upcoming hearing, the NDPP noted that it had to be rescheduled due to the absence of the petitioner’s representatives. ”This further proves that even the petitioner is aware that the case is without any merit,” the party asserted. Confident that the Delhi High Court would dismiss the case, the NDPP stated, ”As and when the hearing does happen, the NDPP is confident that the case will be dismissed by the Delhi High Court just as it was dismissed in the court of the ECI once the facts and figures are placed before the Honorable High Court.”

The NDPP affirmed its respect for the judiciary, stating, “justice will be delivered without any biasness whatsoever and that the stand of the NDPP will be vindicated.”
