NEC says Rs 515 crore spent in Nagaland under 15th FC period

The North Eastern Council (NEC) has stated that Rs 515.04 crore was spent in Nagaland during the 15th Finance Commission period (2022–26) under the Schemes of NEC (SoNEC) and NESIDS-Roads programs, covering sectors such as roads, agriculture, tourism, education, culture and livelihood development.

According to a DIPR report, Rs 205.84 crore was spent under SoNEC for projects related to sports and tourism infrastructure, educational institutions, cultural complexes, skill development centres and community infrastructure, including initiatives targeting backward and tribal communities.

The NEC said interventions were also undertaken in agriculture and allied sectors through promotion of sericulture, beekeeping, horticulture, coffee, rubber, bamboo, handloom and handicrafts, livestock and fisheries, along with post-harvest and value-addition initiatives.

Under the NESIDS Roads program, nine road projects worth Rs 309.20 crore were taken up in Nagaland during the 15th FC period, of which five projects valued at Rs 231.79 crore have been completed, the report stated.

Among the completed projects is the upgradation of the road from Dikhu Bridge to Amguri in Mokokchung district.

For the financial year 2025–26, NEC said four projects worth Rs 67.87 crore were sanctioned for Nagaland, including a cluster-based coffee value chain development project aimed at promoting coffee cultivation, processing, branding and marketing in the state.

The Council also sanctioned projects for post-harvest coffee processing facilities and an integrated development project in the Phomching Assembly Constituency in Mon district focusing on irrigation and water management.

On youth and education initiatives, NEC said 581 students from institutions across the country visited universities and institutes in the Northeast under the Ashtalakshmi Youth Exchange Programme, including Nagaland University and National Institute of Technology (NIT), Nagaland.

Under the NE-SPARKS program, 786 students from the Northeastern states, including 95 from Nagaland, visited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) during 2025–26, according to the report.

The NEC further stated that funds were released in April 2026 for ongoing projects in Nagaland, including construction of a Cultural Activity Complex at Pfutseromi village, promotion of Naga Chilly and the North East Festival of Rice, establishment of a Handicraft Facility Centre in Kohima, and assessment of strategic and critical minerals in the state.

Under NESIDS Roads, NEC said Rs 17.37 crore was released in April 2026 for projects including the upgradation of roads in Mon district, construction of the Glory Peak Tourist Road in Phek district, the Tenning-Lekie road, and the Riaga-Sango village road project.
