Mokokchung, February 19 (MTNews): A Neighborhood Youth Parliament organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Mokokchung District in collaboration with The Green Team was held at Jubilee Memorial College, Mokokchung.
Speaking on “Depression and anxiety among the youth: symptoms, causes and treatment” resource person, Lanuakum said, “Lack of awareness and lack of understanding is a major factor for mental health problems among our society.”
He emphasized the importance of mental health problem prevailing in Naga society and added that, due to ignorance, the society does not understand the concept of mental health.
According to a study shared by him, 60% of citizens from Mokokchung prefer to choose traditional healing methods instead of consulting professional psychiatrics or counselors.
He further highlighted the kinds of depression, its causes, symptoms, diagnoses and services available to patients at District Mental Health Program.
“Having mental health issue is normal; it can be treated effectively if treated in the initial stage. Time never heals mental scars,” he said, while encouraging participants not to hesitate to ask help and reach out to a therapist to be evaluated and treated for depression.
Resource person Arentemjen, speaking on the role of youth in socio economic development said, “Dignity of work is hijacked by false pride in our society, we should not be ashamed of doing petty works in front of others.”
He mentioned how Naga society is sick following the ‘Indian Crab Mentality’ where one tries to pull the other down.
He also added that Nagas have become job seekers rather than job creators.
The Neighborhood Youth Parliament is held three times every year under the aegis of NYKS with an objective to empower the youth in contemporary socio economic developmental issues and to articulate the importance of local administration.
The parliament was attended by students of Jubilee Memorial College.
