The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) on Thursday questioned the role of the Central Government in the ongoing Manipur conflict, while condemning recent killings, abductions and attacks on civilians amid tensions between Kukis and Nagas in the state.
In a meeting convened in Guwahati and hosted by the All Assam Students’ Union, NESO expressed concern over “repeated incidents of ambushes, killings, abductions, and intimidation of innocent civilians,” stating that the incidents have created “an atmosphere of fear, insecurity, and instability” in the region.
The organisation “unequivocally condemned” the killing and attacks on innocent civilians, including church leaders, and stated that violence against unarmed civilians “who were on a peace mission can never be justified.”
NESO also appealed for the unconditional release of hostages reportedly being held and urged that no harm be inflicted upon them.
In one of its strongest observations, the organisation questioned the role of the Government of India, accusing it of inaction in addressing the prolonged conflict.
“NESO expresses strong condemnation and questions the role of the Government of India for its inaction and alleged inflammatory role in this prolonged conflict, which continues to claim innocent lives and destabilize the region,” the resolution stated.
The organisation further said several people have remained missing since the violence began and demanded that authorities take effective measures to ascertain their whereabouts.
Appealing for peace and restoration of normalcy, NESO urged all communities and stakeholders to reject violence and retaliation and work collectively towards peace and justice in Manipur.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the All Manipur Students’ Union, All Assam Students’ Union, All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union, Khasi Students’ Union, Mizo Zirlai Pawl, Garo Students’ Union and the Naga Students’ Federation.
