The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated around 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers of deceased individuals, as part of an ongoing effort to prevent identity fraud and unauthorised use of the digital ID after a person’s death.
To make this process easier for citizens, UIDAI launched a new online service on June 9, 2025, called ”Reporting of Death of a Family Member”, now live on the myAadhaar portal. The portal allows family members in 24 States and Union Territories, where death registration is integrated with Aadhaar, to report the death of a loved one by submitting the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number, and other details.
Once verified, the Aadhaar number is deactivated.
This move aims to ensure the continued accuracy of the Aadhaar database and curb the risks of misuse, especially in financial transactions or benefit transfers. No Aadhaar number is ever reassigned, and UIDAI emphasized the need to validate and deactivate such numbers “to prevent identity fraud and unauthorised usage.”
To support the process, UIDAI has requested the Registrar General of India (RGI) to share death records from the Civil Registration System (CRS). So far, approximately 1.55 crore death records have been received from 24 States/UTs. Validation has led to the deactivation of over 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers.
For the remaining non-CRS States/UTs, UIDAI said a similar process is underway, with 6.7 lakh death records already received and under validation.
UIDAI is also exploring other data sources such as banks and Aadhaar ecosystem entities, and has begun collaborating with state governments to identify deceased Aadhaar holders. In one pilot effort, UIDAI is sharing demographic data of Aadhaar holders aged over 100 years with state governments to verify their status. Based on responses, further validation and deactivation will follow.
UIDAI has urged Aadhaar number holders to report the death of family members after obtaining a death certificate from the relevant authorities, to prevent the Aadhaar number from being used after death.
The service is expected to be expanded to all States and UTs in due course.
