The Mokokchung Municipal Council, Mokokchung has issued a notification banning all single-use plastic (SUP) carry bags irrespective of microns and single-use plastic bottles for water and soft drinks below one liter within the Mokokchung Municipal jurisdiction, effective from August 1, 2024. This directive, in compliance with the Urban Development Department notification issued on July 10, 2024, aims to curb plastic pollution and promote sustainable practices.
All individuals, institutions, and commercial establishments—including educational institutions, offices, hotels, shops, restaurants, religious and faith-based institutions, industrial establishments, and banquet halls— in the Urban Local Body have been asked to comply with this ban. Non-compliance will result in penalties.
The penalties for breaching the ban are as follows: Rs 10,000 for the first offense; Rs 20,000 for the second offense; and cancellation of trade permits for subsequent offenses.
