Inauguration of the new Mokokchung District Court Complex on Friday was indeed a momentous occasion for the district although there was not much hype around it, maybe because it was not a politician who inaugurated it. The complex, now perhaps one of the best in the state and located adjacent to the Deputy Commissioner’s office, has an imposing significance. However, as stated by one of the speakers, the significance of this magnificent building should extend far beyond its physical structure.

The judiciary and legal services in general are of profound importance for citizens although tribal societies like ours are yet to gauge the full meaning and interpretation of it. The judiciary is crucial in upholding the rule of law, maintaining order, safeguarding individual rights, ensuring a fair and impartial resolution of disputes, and promoting justice. In fact, democracy would not and cannot function without the judiciary. That is why legal services are of paramount importance.

Legal services are fundamental to upholding the rule of law in a democratic society. They ensure that laws and regulations are enforced, and individuals and organizations are held accountable for their actions. The legal system provides a framework for resolving disputes, punishing wrongdoing, and maintaining social order. They are essential for ensuring access to justice for all members of society. They help individuals and communities understand their legal rights and responsibilities, navigate complex legal processes, and seek remedies for any grievances or injustices they may face.

Legal services are instrumental in safeguarding individual rights and liberties. They help protect civil liberties, such as freedom of speech, religion, and assembly, ensuring that individuals can exercise these rights without undue interference. Legal services facilitate the resolution of disputes through negotiation, mediation, arbitration, or litigation. By providing a structured and fair process for resolving conflicts, legal services help parties reach mutually acceptable solutions or obtain a just resolution in court. This contributes to stability, social cohesion, and the efficient functioning of the economy. Legal services contribute to promoting social justice and equality. They address systemic inequalities, advocate for marginalized groups, and promote the rights of vulnerable populations.

Legal services are vital for business and economic development. They help establish and enforce contracts, protect intellectual property, ensure compliance with regulations, and facilitate transactions. Businesses rely on legal advice to navigate legal complexities, mitigate risks, and make informed decisions. A robust legal framework fosters trust, encourages investment, and promotes economic growth. It also plays a crucial role in shaping and interpreting legislation and regulations. Legal professionals assist in drafting laws, advising policymakers, and ensuring that laws are consistent with constitutional principles and human rights standards. They also provide guidance on the interpretation and application of laws, helping individuals and organizations understand their rights and obligations.

With the inauguration of the complex, it is hoped that the legal professionals in Mokokchung will be reinvigorated and bolstered to perform their roles better than ever. Apart from professional duties, it is expected of them to provide legal advice, representation, and advocacy to empower individuals to exercise their rights and protect their interests; to play a critical role in defending individuals against discrimination, harassment, and violations of their rights, whether in the workplace, public spaces, or other contexts; to fight against discrimination, promote equal access to justice, and advocate for legal reforms that advance social and economic rights.
