In a development that could potentially reshape the geographical boundaries of India’s neighboring region, Myanmar’s Arakan Army, which has been fighting against the military regime, is reportedly nearing the achievement of independence. According to reports, the Arakan Army has taken control of 15 out of 18 provinces in Myanmar’s Rakhine State and is making further advances.
For context, the Arakan Army has been engaged in conflict with Myanmar’s military junta for the past four years. In 2021, the military junta overthrew the Su Kyi government in a coup and has ruled the country since then.
In late 2024, the Arakan Army captured Ann, a strategic base of operations for the Myanmar Army’s Western Command in Rakhine. Additionally, the group gained control of Maungdaw, solidifying its dominance over the Bangladeshi border.
Earlier, news agency Reuters reported that the Arakan Army released footage of junta forces surrendering in the town of Ann, highlighting the growing strength of the rebel group.
The rise of the Arakan Army poses significant challenges to India, particularly regarding its investments, regional stability, and strategic initiatives in Myanmar. To address these risks, India must prioritize proactive diplomatic engagement and focus on securing its interests in the region.
Meanwhile, security measures along the 510-km Mizoram-Myanmar border have been intensified. Following directives from the Centre, movement of people living within 10 kilometers on either side of the unfenced border is now regulated.
An official stated that residents of both countries living within 10 kilometers of the border are required to obtain a border pass to cross. The pass, valid for up to seven days, is issued to citizens of both nations upon providing documents verifying their residency within the designated area.
State police, Assam Rifles, and health officials began implementing the new regulations at certain entry and exit points from December 31, based on guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). (With inputs from agencies)
