Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the two-day ‘Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit’ in Guwahati today, in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, several Union and state ministers, foreign envoys, and prominent industry leaders.
“The land of Eastern India and the Northeast is going to start a new future today,” said PM Modi in his inaugural speech. He emphasized Assam’s rich industrial heritage and its potential to emerge as a dominant force in India’s industrial landscape.
The summit saw a record-breaking wave of investment commitments across various sectors, highlighting Assam’s growing appeal as an investment destination. Industry leaders pledged over Rs 1.22 lakh crore, signaling a new phase in the state’s industrial journey.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma described the summit as a milestone for Assam’s economic development. He pointed out that the event coincided with the celebration of 200 years of Assam Tea, the state’s first major industry, which was discovered in 1823. Dr. Sarma also highlighted Assam’s pioneering role in India’s oil industry and noted that coal was discovered in the state as early as 1847, laying the foundation for Assam’s industrial growth.
“When India gained independence, Assam was an economic frontrunner, thriving on tea, natural resources, and hydrocarbon reserves, with a per capita income exceeding the national average by 4%,” Dr. Sarma remarked.
Mukesh Ambani pledges Rs 50,000 crore investment in Assam
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has committed to investing over Rs 50,000 crore in Assam over the next five years, Chairman Mukesh Ambani announced at the summit.
Speaking at the Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit, Ambani emphasized Reliance’s long-term commitment to the state’s growth, particularly in the technology and digital sectors.
“In the coming years, Reliance will more than quadruple its investment in Assam, totaling over Rs 50,000 crore,” Ambani stated.
He reflected on the company’s earlier commitment of Rs 5,000 crore during the 2018 summit and noted that Reliance had already exceeded Rs 12,000 crore in investments in the state. Ambani also credited Jio for modernizing Assam’s telecom infrastructure, stating that the state is now “not only 2G-mukt but 5G-yukt” (free from 2G and empowered with 5G).
“I thank the people of Assam for embracing Jio wholeheartedly,” Ambani added.
Adani Group to invest Rs 50,000 Crore in Assam
Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, announced an investment of Rs 50,000 crore in Assam, spanning key infrastructure sectors such as airports, aero cities, city gas distribution, transmission, cement, and roads.
“This vision of progress is one that we are eager to be part of. It is with great pride that I announce today the Adani Group’s commitment to invest Rs 50,000 crore in Assam,” Adani said.
He credited PM Modi’s vision, which started with the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in 2003, as the catalyst for the national investment-driven transformation. “What started as a spark in Gujarat has now ignited a national movement,” Adani remarked.
Centre plans to build Asia’s largest hyperscale data centres in Assam: Scindia
Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced plans to establish four hyperscale data centres in Assam, which will be the largest in Asia. Addressing a technical session at the summit, Scindia revealed that Rs 400 crore is being invested to strengthen Assam’s telecom and IT infrastructure.
“The first data centre in the Northeast was inaugurated by PM Modi last year. Along with the 5G network, we are planning to set up Asia’s four largest hyperscale data centres in Assam, covering 1 million square feet,” Scindia said.
He highlighted the Centre’s commitment to ensuring that all technological capabilities reach the Northeast, with ongoing investments in research and development (R&D) at IIT-Guwahati and NIT Silchar, as well as the establishment of a third 5G lab at Gauhati University.
“We are investing Rs 400 crore to enhance telecom and digital infrastructure in Assam,” he added. Scindia also emphasized Assam’s potential as a manufacturing and logistics powerhouse, urging Chief Minister Dr Sarma to rename the summit from “Advantage Assam” to “Advantage India.”
