Mokokchung, 4 July (MTNews): The residents of several villages in Mokokchung district have issued an ultimatum to the concerned authorities, demanding immediate repair and maintenance of NH 702D Mariani-Mokokchung Road. According to the villagers, the road, which has been neglected for the past 15 years, has deteriorated to such an extent that it is becoming increasingly difficult for vehicles, especially small and light ones, to traverse the stretch between Tzurang River and New Camp.
In a letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, the villagers expressed their deep regret and anguish over the prolonged negligence of the road by the relevant department. Despite repeated requests and reminders, their concerns have fallen on ‘deaf ears’, leaving them with no choice but to issue this ultimatum, they said.
The villagers said in the ultimatum that the affected stretch of NH 702D is considered the only lifeline for transportation of essential commodities and materials for public consumption in Mokokchung, Zunheboto, and Tuensang districts, as well as the adjoining areas. However, due to the dilapidated condition of the road, the villagers said that it has become virtually impossible for truck transporters to carry heavy loads, raising concerns about potential accidents.
The ultimatum, which was jointly issued by the Village Councils of Chungliyimsen, Japu, Satsukba, Azuphumi, Merayim, and Changki, as well as the Convenor of AWC Association Mangkolemba and Lendimenba, the convenor of all concerned villages, called for immediate repair works to be carried out within 15 days from the date of issuing the ultimatum. The villagers further made it clear that failure to address their demands will result in a ban on vehicles from using the road.
