At least nine people were killed in separate incidents of violence across Manipur’s Kamjong, Kangpokpi and Ukhrul districts between Friday night and Saturday, according to reports published by Hindustan Times. The incidents included the deaths of two people near Chassad in Kamjong, attacks on Naga village guards in Kamjong and Kangpokpi, and the killing of a Nepali-origin man in Ukhrul.
In Kamjong district, Domkhonei Touthang, 42, and Michael Ngamminlen Haokip, 23, were killed near Chassad police station on Friday night during an exchange of fire involving security personnel and people in alleged illegal bunkers.
According to the FIR account reported by Hindustan Times, police, India Reserve Battalion personnel and BSF personnel had gone to demolish the bunkers after receiving information about suspicious movements by Kuki National Army (KNA) militants. The FIR reportedly states that two or three people inside the bunkers attempted to flee and opened fire, prompting security forces to retaliate.
The Kuki Women Union, however, alleged that Haokip was killed by NSCN(IM) and its Eastern Flank. The competing accounts have not been independently verified.
Reports of houses burnt in the Chassad area also differed. Initial reports cited at least 14 houses, while a subsequent Hindustan Times report put the figure at around 23, comprising 12 Tangkhul Naga and 11 Kuki houses.
In a separate incident in Kamjong, two Naga village guards, Ngachanso Ningshen, 30, and Leishishan Hungyo, 50, were killed at Ningchou Chingdong village on Saturday morning. Police said the possible involvement of armed groups operating across the India-Myanmar border was being investigated.
In Kangpokpi district, three Naga village guards were killed in an attack at Makui around 5 am on Saturday. The Makui Village Authority alleged that one victim had been beheaded and accused several armed groups of involvement. These allegations have not been independently confirmed.
Another Naga volunteer, Machungwangbou, 35, was killed in an alleged ambush near Tapon later that morning. Two others were injured. According to the account reported by Hindustan Times, they were travelling to assist Makui following news of the earlier attack.
In Ukhrul district, Sandeep Rai, 30, a Nepali-origin resident of Taphou Senapati Nepali village, was killed in an ambush near Konjang village while travelling along National Highway 202 on Saturday morning. The attackers and their motive were not known.
The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), a Kuki organisation, announced a 24-hour shutdown in Kangpokpi district from Saturday evening. Commercial establishments remained closed on Sunday, and NH-2 was blocked at several locations.
Chief Minister Khemchand Singh condemned the killings and directed authorities to take steps to restore order and protect residents. He also appealed to community leaders and civil society organisations to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue.
According to Hindustan Times, the remains of seven of the nine victims had been handed over to their families by Sunday. The circumstances of the separate attacks and allegations of responsibility require further verification. (Source: Based on reports published by Hindustan Times on October 10 and 11, 2026.)
