“I have full confidence in my players,” says Niuland Coach Kivilu ahead of high-stakes clash
Niuland secured a place in the semi-finals of the ongoing Dr T Ao Trophy after edging past Chümoukedima 1–0 in a tense quarter-final encounter on Monday. The decisive moment came in first-half stoppage time when Chümoukedima’s Merensang (Jr. No. 4) inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
Speaking to Mokokchung Times after the match, Niuland coach Kivilu K Kiba expressed gratitude for the result. “I thank God for this win. The game was considered 50-50,” he said.
Kiba acknowledged that the team faced tactical challenges with two key players unavailable — one through suspension and another due to injury. “It was a bit challenging, but we were able to execute according to the plan. Chümoukedima’s strength was in set pieces, especially in kicking corners, so we focused on man-marking. After they conceded the goal, in the second half, we planned to defend,” he explained.
When asked if Chümoukedima had been their toughest opponent, Kiba noted, “We struggled a lot, but we have played with Mon, Tuensang, and Chümoukedima …they were all tough games. We were able to pick up instantly in each match.”
Looking ahead to the semi-finals, the coach voiced confidence in his squad. “I have full confidence in my players. I’m sure they will give their sweat, blood, and tears until the final whistle,” he said.
On whether Niuland, as one of Nagaland’s newest districts, had faced added difficulties in team preparation, Kiba admitted, “It was a bit challenging. While looking at players profile, we were a bit less confident – some players did not participate, and some were injured. We also struggled a little with ball control and fitness. At first, it was difficult, but we had about 15–20 days of intense training camps, and we managed to pull through.”
Niuland will now prepare to face their semi-final opponent later this week.
Sounds like a humble and heartfelt reaction — giving thanks and acknowledging the match could have gone either way.
