The Nagaland Law Students’ Federation (NLSF) has expressed strong solidarity with the RMSA teachers of Nagaland, who have launched a protest citing non-compliance with a court verdict on their pay scales. In a statement issued on Monday, NLSF described the failure to implement the order as “a clear act of contempt of court and a serious violation of the rule of law.”
The NLSF stated that the Division Bench of the Gauhati High Court, in its judgment and order dated March 16, 2022, in W.A. No. 9/2020, directed the state government to grant the RMSA teachers a pay band of ₹9,300–34,800 with a grade pay of ₹4,200 per month. The Supreme Court subsequently upheld this verdict in SLP (C) No. 19524/2022.
Quoting from the judgment, NLSF highlighted, “The court holds that the petitioners are entitled for scales of pay at pay band of ₹9,300–34,800/- with Grade Pay of ₹4,200/- p.m. Accordingly, it is directed the State respondents to grant such scales of pay to the petitioners forthwith.”
The NLSF pointed out that despite the legal mandate and the teachers’ patience since the judgment, the delay in implementation has compelled the Nagaland RMSA Teachers’ Association (NRMSATA) to launch a “Pen Down Strike” from August 26, 2025.
NLSF stated that the prolonged stalemate not only threatens the livelihood of the teachers but also affects the quality of education in government high schools across the state.
“We therefore urge the state government to uphold the dignity of the court and ensure justice to the aggrieved teachers while safeguarding the educational rights of the children of this state,” stated NLSF President Neivisielie Rino and General Secretary Temsu I Jamir.
