The Naga National Council / Federal Government of Nagaland (NNC/FGN) has denied any connection with individuals allegedly involved in illegal taxation and extortion, stating that no person or group has the authority to collect taxes from the general Naga public in the name of the NNC or FGN.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Chaplee, Federal Government of Nagaland, the NNC/FGN said that reports of illegal taxation and extortion have been doing the rounds in recent times and referred specifically to the arrest of a 71-year-old man, identified as Mathungo, on December 9, 2025.
According to the statement, Mathungo claimed to be a “Deputy Chaplee Kilonser of FGN”. The NNC/FGN, however, said “there is no such person in the FGN holding the post of Deputy Kilonser”.
The organisation said the public should be aware that “there is only one NNC/FGN”, adding that Adinno Phizo is the President of the NNC and Kezha Angami is the Kedahge of the FGN.
It said that “any other person or groups claiming to be NNC/FGN” should be considered illegitimate.
“If there is or are any other persons or groups claiming to be NNC/FGN then let it be made clear that they are gangs of parasite that need to be weeded out of a civil society like ours,” the statement said.
The NNC/FGN further stated that it “will not tolerate such nefarious gangs” and said it would “neither recognise nor honour the punishment meted out to such criminals by the occupying forces or its administration and police”.
Reiterating its political position, the statement said that the Nagas are “legally independent and sovereign” and have their own constitution, Yehzabo, flag and laws, which it said would be implemented “in letter, spirit and action”.
It warned that “any gangs or groups operating in the name of NNC/FGN will be met with the full and harsh force of our country legally established laws”.
The statement also said that “any group or groups, whether using the nomenclature of the NNC/FGN or not, have no right whatsoever to collect taxes or extort from the general Naga public”.
Citing the Lakhuti Resolution of 1955, the NNC/FGN said “there is only one national institution, platform and umbrella and that is the NNC”. It added that the FGN, as the “agency and established government of the Nagas”, would “do all that is necessary to weed out such criminal elements that existential threats hampering our nation from thriving”.
