The Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) has introduced a centralized sanitation system across Mokokchung town, making sanitation cards and fee payment records mandatory for households seeking access to certain municipal services.
The new system, which came into effect from April 2026, was finalized during a coordination meeting held on March 16 between the MMC and Ward Authorities under the municipality’s jurisdiction.
Under the arrangement, the MMC has centralized the collection and management of garbage and waste from all wards, while Ward Authorities will collect a monthly sanitation fee of Rs. 50 from each household and submit it to the MMC once every three months.

In a notification issued by MMC Chief Executive Officer and ADC Atsungba Walling, the council stated that the newly-issued Sanitation Cards will not only function as records for sanitation services but will also be required for availing “various other services, entitlements and other official works” processed through the municipal council office.
The notification further stated that households failing to obtain or maintain sanitation cards and payment records “shall not be entertained or considered eligible for certain services and works under the MMC.”
The move is expected to affect every household within Mokokchung town and marks one of the municipality’s most significant attempts in recent years to streamline waste management and improve sanitation monitoring through a centralized mechanism.
The council, however, did not specify which services may be denied to households that fail to maintain sanitation records.
The MMC said the implementation and progress of the centralized sanitation system will be reviewed after six months.
The council also appealed to residents to cooperate with Ward Authorities and ensure timely payment of sanitation fees for the “smooth functioning and effective maintenance of sanitation services within the town.”
The notification added that public cooperation in maintaining cleanliness and proper waste management in Mokokchung town would be “highly appreciated.”
