Suicide remains a significant public health issue, claiming over 700,000 lives globally each year. The profound social, emotional, and economic impacts of suicide resonate deeply within communities worldwide.

To raise awareness and promote prevention, the Psychology program at North East Christian University (NECU), Burma Camp, Dimapur, organized a special event themed “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” aligning with the World Suicide Prevention Day 2024-2026 theme. The event featured the premiere screening of a short film created by students, showcasing their efforts to address the issue creatively.

The theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” underscores the need to diminish stigma and foster open discussions about suicide prevention. By shifting from a culture of silence to one of understanding and support, the initiative aims to encourage conversations that can lead to stronger support networks and increased awareness.

“Every conversation, no matter how small, contributes to a supportive and understanding society. By fostering these essential dialogues, we can break down barriers, raise awareness, and build stronger support networks,” stated an update from NECU.

The program also featured a creative writing competition, with winners receiving cash prizes and certificates. Keveluyi Theyo, an MBA student in the 1st semester at NECU, secured first place, while Imtimoala Imsong from Hope Academy earned second place.
