The North East Leaders’Meet for the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme was held on February 1, 2026, at ACTA Bhavan in Guwahati, Assam. The meeting brought together service associations and representatives from several North Eastern states who are campaigning for the reinstatement of the Old Pension Scheme for government employees.
Participants discussed the challenges arising from the National Pension System and stressed the need to return to the assured, defined benefit Old Pension Scheme to ensure financial security and dignity for employees after retirement. The meeting resolved that all participating associations would unite and jointly appeal to their respective state governments and, where applicable, the Central Government for the immediate restoration of the Old Pension Scheme across the North East.
To strengthen coordination and advance the movement at a regional level, the meeting decided to constitute a Coordination Committee under the banner of the North East Govt. Employees Welfare Federation. The committee will work to align strategies, coordinate joint actions, and formally engage with governments at different levels. It was also decided that the next leadership meeting of the federation will be held on February 14, 2026, in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, to review progress and plan further campaigns.
Representing Nagaland, Nagaland NPS Forum State President Avizo Nienu and State Finance Secretary Adabe Namgi participated in the meeting. Speaking on the occasion, Avizo Nienu said, “The Nagaland NPS Forum has submitted several representations to the Government of Nagaland seeking restoration of the Old Pension Scheme, but regrettably, there has been no positive response so far.” He called for unity among government employees across the region to pursue the demand collectively. Participants expressed hope that the coordinated regional approach would build momentum and prompt action from the authorities.
