Mokokchung, 4 August (MTNews): The North East Students’ Organization (NESO), a conglomeration of student unions representing various states in the Northeast, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey, and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, urging them to take immediate action to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur.

NESO is a conglomeration of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF).

In the letter addressed to Prime Minister Modi, NESO highlighted the region’s diverse and unique characteristics and emphasized the long history of goodwill and harmonious coexistence among the states. The organization stressed that respect, peace, and democracy are the cornerstones of relationships among the Northeastern states and with neighboring communities.

NESO expressed concern over the volatile situation in Manipur despite the presence of more than 40,000 central forces and the intervention of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. It also said that the conflict has cost hundreds of lives while irreparable damages have also been caused and voiced disappointment that the PM’s office has remained silent on the “sensitive and unfortunate events” unfolding in Manipur.

The student organization warned that if the situation is not addressed with utmost sincerity, it could have long-term negative impacts on peace and stability across the entire North East region. NESO also appealed for an immediate cessation of all forms of violence, arson, and disharmony in Manipur.

Furthermore, NESO urged the Prime Minister’s office to find ways to help the students affected by the violence and ameliorate their situation to prevent any adverse impact on their educational and career prospects.

In conclusion, NESO appealed for humanity to prevail across all social and geo-political spectrums in the North East region. A similar appeal was directed to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey.

Simultaneously, NESO also addressed Chief Minister N Biren Singh and his government, requesting them to take all necessary steps to ensure peace and normalcy returns to the state. The organization emphasized the need to rebuild cordial relationships between different communities, facilitate smooth trade, business, and livelihood, and provide justice to those who have suffered during the unrest.

NESO also expressed deep concern for the future generation of the society—the students—who have been severely impacted by the three-month-long violence. The organization called upon the Chief Minister’s office to develop ways and strategies to compensate students in terms of their curriculum and ensure that no student is denied the benefits of education.
