First-ever interstate meet backs shared hosting model; Rs 1,500 crore sports investment unveiled in Shillong

In a momentous push toward the 39th National Games in 2027, Meghalaya on Saturday brought together Sports Ministers, top officials, and Olympic Association representatives from all eight Northeastern states for the region’s first-ever interstate coordination meeting held in Shillong.

Chaired by Meghalaya Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri, the landmark gathering marked the beginning of a collaborative journey to transform the 2027 Games into a celebration of regional unity, sporting excellence, and infrastructure development.

“We are not just preparing to host the National Games—we are preparing to make history,” Warjri declared. “This is an opportunity to show the strength of the Northeast, not only in sport but in solidarity.”

A shared hosting model emerged as a key highlight of the meeting, with unanimous support for the idea of conducting select disciplines across various Northeastern states. The move aims to optimise resources, expand participation, and encourage a spirit of ownership beyond Meghalaya.

Describing the meeting as a “historic moment of inclusion,” Arunachal Pradesh Sports Minister Kento Jini said the Northeast is “ready to shine—through infrastructure, talent, and collaboration.”

Also speaking at the meet, Dr. Vijay Kumar D., Commissioner and Secretary of Sports, Government of Meghalaya, announced a Rs 1,500 crore investment for sports infrastructure in the state. The package will fund new stadiums, athlete hostels, sports medicine centres, and grassroots-level facilities in multiple districts.

With over 10,000 athletes expected to compete in more than 30 disciplines, the upcoming Games will be the largest sporting event ever hosted by Meghalaya, promising long-term gains for sports development in the entire region.

More than an event, officials say, the 2027 National Games will serve as a turning point for Northeast India’s place in the national sports narrative.

“This is more than just a sporting event,” Warjri added. “It’s a statement of who we are—united, determined, and ready to leave a legacy far beyond the Games.”
