Lieutenant General (Retd) VS Atem VC of the NSCN-IM said that no outsiders, either Chinese or American, but Nagas alone must do their best to stand by their rights.

“No outside people, either Chinese or American will be able to do best for the Nagas. It is the Nagas themselves who should do their best to stand by their rights,” said Atem during a “One Day People’s Consultative Meeting” organized under the aegis of Makuilongdi Zeliangrong Region, GPRN and the people of Liangmai and Inpui at Tamei,Tamenglong, on 12 October 2023.

Atem reaffirmed the NSCN-IM’s unwavering stance on the Naga Flag, Constitution, and Integration issues, stating, “We cannot give up our national identity under any given situation in the name of Naga solution.”

He urged the Liangmai and Inpui people not to be misled by false propaganda that the Nagas might be left with nothing while the Kuki-Zo and Meitei may receive concessions. He stressed that such claims were baseless, as “God knows better for the Nagas,” and he asserted that “Nagas are God’s special chosen people.”

General Atem also shared historical accounts, including the Naga Army’s journey to China, which took 8 months while encountering enemy fire 31 times, causing the mighty Indian Army to acknowledge that the Naga political movement cannot be suppressed militarily but rather through political means.

He emphasized that the Government of India had repeatedly attempted to deceive the Nagas into submission, but the Nagas’ determination could not be fooled. He cited the repercussions for Indian political leaders who ignored the Naga issue, such as former Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi’s family and Morarji Desai, who expressed disdain for the Nagas.

Atem highlighted the uniqueness of Naga history, where Nagas refused to join the Union of India when more than 500 princely states accepted the offer, remaining steadfast in their declaration of independence on August 14, 1947. He credited Haipou Jadonang for guiding the Nagas in standing for their political rights and commended the role of God in leading the Nagas to become bona fide members of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO).

He also mentioned that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had vowed to walk the extra mile to find a Naga political solution but couldn’t go beyond this while RS Pandey, the former interlocutor for Naga political talks, acknowledged that “Unless Naga’s political rights are respected; it will be difficult to find solution.”

Kraibo Chawang, Member of the Collective Leadership, reiterated that NSCN’s position regarding the ongoing Indo-Naga political talks is clear and well-appreciated worldwide. He addressed the controversial Kuki issue, historical references to the Kukis as nomadic tribes, and their refugee status in Manipur.

“The refugee status of Kukis in Manipur is well documented in Indian Parliament records when Naga MP, Mr Suisa fought for the welfare of the Kuki refugees,” he stated.

On the Article 371(A), he cautioned against viewing it as a safeguard for Naga identity and criticized the 16 Point Agreement and Shillong Accord for betraying the Naga people’s political aspirations.

He assured that the NSCN-IM would not betray the Naga nation by accepting the Indian Constitution and would defend what God has provided for the Nagas.

According to MIP of NSCN-IM, during the event, Rev Dr Alungbou Newmai, Executive Secretary, LNBA (M) and ordained Church leaders offered intercessory prayers for the unity and well-being of the Naga leaders, the Makuilongdi Zelianglong Region, the Talk Team of NSCN/GPRN, and the Government of India.

“It was a blessed trip for the NSCN/GPRN to be remembered for many years to come. The expression of support and solidarity was well appreciated and acknowledged,” the MIP stated.

  2. Hmm is anyone else experiencing problems with the images on this blog loading? I’m trying to find out if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog. Any feed-back would be greatly appreciated.
