Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee protests in Kohima on December 18 against the proposed Bill to repeal MGNREGA.

During the protest, Congress leaders and workers described MGNREGA as a lifeline for rural communities, stating that the scheme provides guaranteed employment, supports poor families, and enables people to earn a livelihood with dignity.

They said that for many villages in Nagaland and across the country, MGNREGA serves as a primary source of income during periods of hardship.

The party leaders warned that repealing the Act would adversely affect farmers, daily wage earners, women, and economically weaker sections of society. They said the move would increase unemployment and push many families into deeper economic distress.

Speakers also pointed out that MGNREGA has played a crucial role in supporting people during natural disasters, economic crises, and other emergencies, and maintained that removing the Act would amount to neglecting the needs of rural India.

The NPCC and Kohima DCC demanded that the Government withdraw the proposed Bill and safeguard MGNREGA.

They further called for strengthening the scheme through adequate funding and timely payment of wages instead of repealing it.

The protest, the party said, conveyed the message that development should prioritise the poor and vulnerable sections of society, reaffirming the Congress party’s commitment to protecting the rights, dignity, and livelihoods of rural people.

“The voice of the village matters. The fight for justice continues,” it said.
