The Naga People’s Front (NPF) has strongly criticized the Nagaland Foothills Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC) for referring to MLA Achumbemo Kikon as a “mere MLA,” calling the remark inappropriate and disrespectful to the “democratic process and the institution of elected representatives.”
In a statement issued on Friday, the NPF Central Headquarters asserted that no elected representative should be dismissed in such a manner, as MLAs represent the voices and aspirations of thousands of citizens. The party stated that such careless terminology undermines the very essence of democracy and the principles of governance, where every legislator—regardless of party affiliation—holds a significant responsibility in shaping policies, addressing public concerns, and bridging the gap between the people and the government.
The party expressed particular disappointment over the remark, noting that it comes at a time when Achumbemo Kikon has been actively advocating for the long-pending execution of the Foothill Road project. The NPF pointed out that this project has been left in cold storage for years despite being a crucial lifeline for the people of Nagaland.
“Instead of engaging in constructive dialogue, such disparaging remarks only serve to divert attention from the real issue—the immediate need for the government to take action on the Foothill Road project,” the NPF said.
The NPF reiterated its commitment to upholding the dignity of all individuals, especially those in public service, and called upon organizations and individuals alike to refrain from making derogatory or dismissive statements against elected representatives.
While the party welcomes constructive criticism, it stressed that unwarranted name-calling does not contribute to meaningful discourse.
“Criticism, when constructive, is always welcome in a democracy. However, personal attacks and unwarranted name-calling do not contribute to meaningful discourse,” the NPF said.
Urging all stakeholders, including the NFHRCC, to focus on the common goal of ensuring the timely execution of the Foothills Road project, the NPF called for unity and collective effort. “The people of Nagaland deserve better than divisive rhetoric; they deserve action and results,” the NPF concluded.
