Mokokchung, March 21 (MTNews): The Naga People’s Front Legislature Party (NPFLP) has resolved not to contest the ensuing election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Nagaland. This was decided in an emergency meeting of the NPFLP held this morning at the Assembly Complex. The decision came a day after NPF president on Saturday announced the party’s decision to field veteran politician and working president of NPF, Thenucho Tunyi, as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha.

In a letter addressed to the president of the NPF party, the NPFLP said that it approved of the president’s stand that the NDPP and BJP had not taken proper consultation for nomination to the Rajya Sabha election. However, the NPFLP said that the UDA Government was formed on the understanding of pursuing Naga Political issue for a negotiated solution at the earliest, consequent upon which one of the NPF MLAs was inducted in the Cabinet along with Chairman UDA. “Under the given situation, the NPFLP cannot file nomination to the Rajya Sabha Election which will tantamount to withdrawal from the Coalition Government of UDA,” NPFLP said.

Meanwhile, BJP’s S Phangnon Konyak filed her nomination papers on Monday, which is also the last date for filing of nomination papers. Unless her papers are rejected during scrutiny of March 22, or she withdraws her nomination papers, S Phangnon Konyak will be declared elected uncontested. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures is March 24.
