The National People’s Party (NPP) Nagaland has strongly condemned the racially motivated killing of Angjel Chakma, a youth from the North East, in Dehradun. The party described the attack as “brutal and racially motivated” and expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, calling for swift justice.
In an official statement, NPP Nagaland said the incident highlights “the persistent and systemic failure to ensure the safety and dignity of citizens from the North Eastern region living outside their home states.” The party noted that such acts are part of a disturbing pattern of racial abuse and targeted violence against people from the North East, which cannot be treated as ordinary law-and-order issues.
The party has urged the Uttarakhand government to immediately arrest all those involved, ensure that the accused are booked under the strictest provisions of criminal law, and conduct a time-bound investigation. NPP Nagaland stressed that “exemplary punishment” is necessary to send a clear message that racially motivated violence will not be tolerated.
Calling for wider reforms, the party appealed to Parliament and the Government of India to enact a central legislation specifically addressing racial discrimination and hate crimes. NPP Nagaland emphasized that such a law should include stringent punishment, fast-track trials, protection for victims and witnesses, and clear accountability for law enforcement agencies, warning that repeated assurances without legislative backing have proven ineffective.
The party stated that national integration cannot be maintained when citizens are attacked or killed because of their racial identity and asserted that Parliament must act decisively to ensure that people from the North East can live safely anywhere in India.
NPP Nagaland concluded by reiterating that justice in this case must be exemplary, serving as a strong deterrent against future acts of racial violence and reinforcing the commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of North Eastern citizens.
The statement was issued by the Media and IPR Cell of NPP Nagaland on December 30, 2025.
