The Naga Scholars’ Association (NSA) has condemned the continuing violence against Naga civilians and villages in Manipur, calling for effective protection of civilians, investigation of attacks and accountability for those responsible.
In a statement, the association cited a series of recent incidents, including the killing of four Liangmai Naga civilians, Tadsongbou Ringkangmai, Mariakdibou Wijunamai, Anil Wijunamai and Wisobou Charenamai, in an ambush along the Makui-Ashang-Thanamba stretch of the Imphal-Tamenglong Road on August 27.
It also condemned the killing of 17-year-old NK. Wiphenbou, a Liangmai Naga, in an ambush while travelling towards Tamei in Tamenglong district on September 21.
The association said the burning of at least 41 Naga houses, including churches, in Makui Chamriupui, Makui Thanamba and Makui Thebram on September 23 and 24 was particularly alarming, as residents were forced to flee.
It also referred to the killing of four Tangkhul Naga civilians, Phami Jajo, Vareshim Jajo, Betterson Jajo and Ningthem, at Pilong, Kamjong, on September 24.
The NSA said the incidents formed part of a continuing pattern of killings, abductions, arson and displacement, citing earlier attacks including the abduction of six Naga civilians in May and the killing of two civilians at TM-Kasom village, Ukhrul, on April 18.
Calling on the State and Central governments to prioritise civilian protection, the association said condolences and assurances were insufficient and urged authorities to ensure that those responsible were identified, investigated and brought to justice, while providing protection and rehabilitation to affected communities.
