NSCN/GPRN Mourns the Passing of Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh

The Government of the People’s Republic of Nagalim (NSCN/GPRN) has expressed shock and sadness over the demise of former Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh. In a condolence message issued by the Ministry of Information and Publicity (MIP), the NSCN/GPRN acknowledged his profound contributions to addressing the Naga political issue and remembered him as a leader of vision and integrity.

The NSCN/GPRN highlighted Dr Singh’s approach to the Naga cause, noting his willingness to explore solutions “out of the box” and his commitment to the historical and political rights of the Naga people.

“He was the sorts of Prime Minister of India who stands out in his approach to the Naga political issue showing the way how the Naga issue can be solved,” the NSCN/GPRN said. “With his legitimate conviction on the historical and political rights of the Nagas he was ready to go ‘extra miles’ and solve the Naga political issue ‘out of the box’,” it added.

Recalling his words during the sixth round of talks on December 7, 2004, the NSCN/GPRN quoted him saying, “All efforts will be made to find a solution. A solution acceptable to both the parties can only be found through talks. We are equally keen to work out mutually acceptable honorable solution. We will be sincere in tackling the problem. We will give our utmost effort to hammer out honorable solution. We will explore jointly every possible way to bring solution.”

The condolence message also referenced key milestones during Dr Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister. He deputed three ministers to engage with the NSCN delegation and assured the Naga leadership on February 9, 2005, that “The pattern of relationship should be worked out.”

During a one-on-one meeting with NSCN Chief Negotiator Th Muivah on June 24, 2005 at his official residence, Dr Singh was reported to have said, ” We are  serious, sincere and have the confidence that we could solve the  problem through peaceful means, You have to be patient with us. We have started taking every positive step. We do not under rate your issue. This is our assurance.”

The NSCN/GPRN acknowledged Dr Singh’s boldness and sincerity in his efforts toward solving the Naga political issue. “The memories and experiences with such statesman will provide a lasting legacy for the Nagas,” the NSCN/GPRN said.

Extending its deepest condolences to Dr Singh’s family and close friends, the NSCN/GPRN expressed their collective grief at the loss of a great leader who stood as a beacon of hope for the Naga political solution.

“Indo-Naga history will keep on record his assuring words and commitment. In his demise Nagas have lost a great leader who always stood out for the Naga political solution that is honorable and acceptable to India and Nagalim,” the NSCN/GPRN further said.

“It is our wish that his soul rest in everlasting peace,” the statement concluded.
