Yung Aung-led group alleges Indian agency backing, links Pangsau gunfight to Angmai-Mulatonu group

The NSCN/GPRN (Yung Aung group) has issued a strongly worded press statement accusing the NSCN-K group led by Angmai and Mulatonu of inciting violence in Eastern Nagaland and acting as a proxy of Indian intelligence agencies.

In the statement dated January 14 issued through its MIP, the NSCN/GPRN (YA) alleged that the Angmai-Mulatonu group has “once again, shown contempt for peace desire of the Nagas by inciting violence in Eastern Nagaland acting at the behest of the Indian agencies.” It reiterated its claim that the faction is being used to counter what it described as the Naga struggle spearheaded by the Yung Aung-led NSCN/GPRN.

Referring to conditions in Eastern Nagaland, the statement alleged that the emergence of the group has led to “disunity, confusion, threats, heavy taxation, illegal road blocks etc,” causing suffering among the public. The NSCN/GPRN (YA) accused the NSCN/GPRN (AM) of being insensitive to public hardship and said it posed a serious threat to stability in the region.

The statement also referred to a recent gunfight at Khamteng village near Pangsau town on January 9, 2026. According to the NSCN/GPRN (YA), the incident occurred after the Angmai-Mulatonu group ignored pleas from the public and warnings from the NSCN/GPRN (YA) not to intrude into what it described as its control area. It claimed that the group’s actions were provocative and aimed at escalating tensions in the Pangsau and Namyong areas, creating panic and insecurity among civilians.

Accusing the faction of spreading misinformation, the NSCN/GPRN (YA) said the group was engaged in a propaganda campaign involving fake news and personal attacks. It rejected allegations made against its president, stating, “Yung Aung is not a self-styled Chairman/President but popularly endorsed and elected by all the NSCN/GPRN Party members including Mr.Angmai himself in 2018.”

The statement further alleged that Indian agencies are tolerating and supporting the group as a second force to weaken the NSCN/GPRN (YA). Citing what it described as recent intelligence reports, it claimed the NSCN (AM) had received military equipment and financial assistance to counter the NSCN/GPRN (YA) in the Pangsau area.

The NSCN/GPRN (YA) urged the public to see these developments as an “eye-opener” and warned that such actions would undermine Naga national identity. It advised Angmai and his group to “STOP sowing discord among Nagas” and to refrain from deceiving the public for personal benefit. The statement concluded by calling on the group to pursue peace and development through non-violent and transparent means.
