The National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM) in a recent press communiqué dated July 22, 2024, described the ongoing violence in Manipur as a Meitei-Kuki-Zo ethnic conflict. However, the Arambai Tenggol (AT) in a statement today has firmly asserted that the violence is “aggression of Kuki refugees” against the Meiteis, one of the indigenous peoples of Manipur.

“The NSCN (IM)’s characterization of the conflict overlooks the complex realities on the ground and misrepresents the nature of the aggression faced by the indigenous people of Manipur, especially the Meitei community,” stated Laishram Robason, Control Room Operator at Arambai Tenggol’s GHQ.

The AT stated that the NSCN-IM seems unable to grasp the intricate socio-cultural and religious milieu that led to the emergence of Arambai Tenggol as a voluntary organization.

“Our formation was not instigated by any particular individual but was a collective response to the pressing need to protect and preserve the socio-cultural and religious heritage of the indigenous people of Manipur,” Robason said.

According to the statement, Arambai Tenggol arose from the collective need to protect and preserve the socio-cultural and religious heritage of the indigenous people of Manipur, particularly the Meitei community. The organization represents a unified effort to safeguard their heritage and respond to external threats that seek to undermine their cultural identity, it maintained.

Robason stressed that AT was compelled to defend the Meitei community against armed aggression by Kuki refugees, resulting in the sacrifice of many dedicated members. He strongly criticized the NSCN-IM for labeling AT as a “militant group,” which he argued mischaracterizes their true mission and overlooks their sacrifices in protecting the community and cultural heritage.

Arambai Tenggol reasserted its identity as a socio-cultural organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the social and cultural heritage of the indigenous people of Manipur. Their mission includes ensuring that the rich traditions, customs, and religious practices of Manipur’s indigenous communities are maintained and passed down through generations.

The NSCN-IM’s claim that Arambai Tenggol harbors “strong animosity towards Christians, both in spirit and actions” was also refuted. Robason clarified that while AT respects all religions and the right to religious practice, they stand firmly against any form of conversion that seeks to undermine or destroy the cultural and religious heritage of the indigenous people of Manipur.

“Through various initiatives and community engagements, Arambai Tenggol strives to foster a deep appreciation for our cultural roots and encourage the younger generation to take pride in their heritage. We strive to work collaboratively with local communities, cultural practitioners, and scholars to document, celebrate, and revitalize traditional practices, ensuring they remain vibrant and relevant in the modern world,” stated Robason in the statement.

It further went on to say that Arambai Tenggol remains committed to create a strong, unified voice for the indigenous people of Manipur, advocating for their rights and promoting the preservation of their unique cultural legacy. By doing so, they aim to contribute to a diverse and culturally rich society where the heritage of every community is valued and protected.
