President of the NSCN/GPRN, Yung Aung, on the organisation’s 46th Raising Day reiterated the group’s position on Naga sovereignty and accused India of intensifying military measures along what he described as “imposed borders.”

In his presidential message issued on January 31, Yung Aung said the NSCN/GPRN was founded in 1980 to “save the Naga movement from complete destruction” and to uphold the commitment made by the Naga people during the 1951 plebiscite.

Reaffirming the group’s core political position, he stated, ”Freedom is the only destination.” He asserted that the Nagas “don’t need India or Myanmar to rule over us,” adding that the organisation’s resolve on sovereignty remained “unshaken.”

The NSCN/GPRN president alleged that Indian security forces were escalating military actions against the Naga population, claiming that “they have unleashed their full military might and utilized modern technological advantage to subdue and crush our spirit.” He further alleged that “aerial terrorism” had been carried out along the borders, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to property.

Yung Aung also criticised the construction of fencing along the India–Myanmar border, describing it as “illegal” and alleging that it was being carried out despite resistance from the Naga people. He claimed the move reflected a “blatant disregard for the legitimate voices of the Nagas.”

Taking aim at the Indian government, he accused the BJP-led administration of eroding democratic and secular values, alleging increased attacks on religious minorities, particularly Christians, since 2014.

On the peace process, Yung Aung said the NSCN/GPRN had chosen not to participate in what he termed the “Indian dictated Naga peace process,” alleging that New Delhi was attempting to determine the political future of the Nagas “on the basis of military might.”

He also criticised other Naga political groups, accusing them of abandoning sovereignty and creating divisions within the Naga movement.

Despite these challenges, Yung Aung said the NSCN/GPRN remained prepared to defend Naga land and people, asserting that the organisation would not “silently bow to the deceptive policies and threats of our occupiers and their proxies.”
