The National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, lauding his support for the Naga people’s rights and his significant interest in the Indo-Naga peace dialogue.
In a condolence message issued on December 30, 2024, Th. Muivah, General Secretary of the NSCN, described Carter as a “distinguished leader who held deep respect for the rights of the Naga people and closely followed the progress of the Indo-Naga dialogue for many years.” Muivah noted that Carter envisioned a secure and honourable future for the Nagas.
Muivah recalled that following the signing of the Amsterdam Joint Communique on July 11, 2002, Carter demonstrated his commitment to the Naga cause by writing to then-Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, on June 18, 2005.
“In this letter, he commended Dr. Singh’s wise and courageous leadership in advancing the Naga political issue towards a peaceful and lasting solution that would ensure the rights of the Naga people while maintaining India’s security,” Muivah recalled.
The NSCN General Secretary described Carter as a great friend of the Nagas who deeply understood their rights.
“His legacy will continue to inspire and encourage the Naga political struggle, reaffirming their commitment to defend their God-given rights as a people and as a nation,” Muivah added.
On behalf of the NSCN and the Naga people, Muivah extended heartfelt prayers for the eternal peace of Jimmy Carter’s soul.
