The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) on Monday issued a critical weather alert, forecasting heavy to extremely severe rainfall across the state until July 8. The NSDMA, in a press release, cautioned that these rains may be accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, urging the public to take necessary precautions.
“Extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Kohima, Phek, Wokha, Zunheboto, Kiphire, Noklak, Shamator, and Tuensang districts,” stated Johnny Ruangmei, Joint Chief Executive Officer of NSDMA. For Kiphire, Phek, Noklak, Shamator, and Tuensang, an orange alert has been issued from July 2 to 4.
The NSDMA warned that the severe weather could lead to disruptions in communication and connectivity due to lightning strikes and gale-force winds. The lowland and foothill regions, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chumukedima, Bhandari, Pangti, Tizit, and Tuli, are at risk of waterlogging and flash floods due to excessive precipitation, it cautioned. “All major rivers in the state are expected to see a surge in water levels,” it added.
“We advise the public to avoid picnicking and fishing near riverbanks, and farmers should not camp or sleep overnight by the rivers as flash floods may occur,” it warned. The NSDMA also called on all District Disaster Management Authorities and relevant departments to be on high alert to protect lives and property during this monsoon period.
