The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued a weather outlook for the state from September 8 to 11, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and varying intensity of rainfall across several districts.
On September 8, Tseminyu, Wokha and Zunheboto are likely to experience thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by moderate to heavy rain. Chumoukedima, Dimapur, Kohima, Longleng, Mokokchung, Niuland, Noklak, Peren, Phek, Shamator and Tuensang are expected to receive light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning. Kiphire, Meluri and Mon may receive light rain with thunderstorms and lightning.
For September 9, thunderstorms and lightning with light rain are expected in Chumoukedima, Dimapur, Kohima, Longleng, Mokokchung, Niuland, Peren, Phek, Shamator, Tseminyu, Tuensang, Wokha and Zunheboto. Kiphire, Meluri and Mon are under thunderstorm and lightning risk, while Noklak may receive light rain.
On September 10, thunderstorm and lightning risks are forecast for Noklak, Phek, Tseminyu and Zunheboto. Kohima and Tuensang may receive light rain with thunderstorms, while Chumoukedima, Niuland and Peren are likely to receive light rain. Cloudy or overcast conditions are expected in several other districts.
The outlook for September 11 places Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon and Wokha on high alert for thunderstorms and lightning with scattered heavy rain. Tseminyu may receive moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning, while Chumoukedima, Dimapur, Niuland and Tuensang may experience light to moderate rain.
The NSDMA said the four-day cumulative rainfall outlook indicates the highest rainfall in Mokokchung at 113.74 mm, followed by Wokha at 113.14 mm, Longleng at 101.82 mm and Tseminyu at 94.27 mm. Mon, Tuensang, Kohima, Dimapur and Niuland are expected to record 78.14 mm, 68.01 mm, 66.23 mm, 65.98 mm and 63.65 mm respectively.
The public has been advised to monitor the latest weather updates through the Safer Nagaland mobile application and NSDMA Weather Portal and follow official advisories.
Motorists have also been advised to exercise caution while travelling, particularly along vulnerable and landslide-prone stretches, during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
