Kohima, 9 February (MTNews): The Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC) has taken cognizance of the assault on a 19-year-old college student by police personnel. The Commission is investigating the alleged brutal assault on Moalong Jamir, a student of Tetso College, which occurred on 29 January 2024 by the anti-vehicle theft squad (AVTS) of Nagaland Police.
It has instructed the Director General of Police to submit a report within one week, a DIPR report said.
Since its establishment, the Commission has taken up several cases, including two custodial death cases that occurred last year at the Central Jail Dimapur and the Chumoukidema Police station. These cases are progressing rapidly, and it is anticipated that they will be disposed of soon, the DIPR report added.
The Commission has also conducted visits to police stations, jails, hospitals, health centers, government schools, and public distribution centers in the districts of Kohima, Dimapur, Chumoukidema, and Bhandari Sub-Division under Wokha District. Following these visits, interactions with department officials have taken place, and action taken reports have been requested.
Continuing its efforts to promote human rights and prevent violations, the Commission has initiated tours to remote areas of the state, starting from Mon and Longleng districts during the third week of February 2024. During these tours, individuals are encouraged to meet with Commission members for interaction or to submit complaints related to the violation of their human rights.
The Commission will visit police stations, jails, hospitals, health centers, and public distribution centers, in addition to interacting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), including Church leaders and government officials. Such visits or tours will persist during the coming months.
