The National Socialist   Women’s Organisation of Nagalim (NSWON) has condemned what it described as a “brutal crackdown” by the Assam Rifles on Tangkhul Naga women who were staging a peaceful protest at Shokvao/New Heaven and surrounding areas in Ukhrul district on June 7.

In a press statement issued on June 8, NSWON expressed “profound disapproval” of the alleged actions of the 40 Assam Rifles (40 AR), claiming that the women were exercising their democratic right to protest against what they viewed as the force’s unlawful intrusion into areas governed by established Naga customary institutions and practices.

According to NSWON, the demonstration was a peaceful expression of concern over the conduct of the Assam Rifles and was intended to assert accountability, dignity, and respect for customary jurisdiction.

The organisation stated that the incident was not an isolated episode and alleged that repeated actions disregarding customary authority and local protocols have contributed to growing mistrust between the Assam Rifles and Naga communities.

NSWON maintained that any use of force, intimidation, or coercion against peaceful women demonstrators would be inconsistent with democratic principles and the standards expected of security forces.

The organisation urged the Assam Rifles and relevant authorities to exercise restraint and engage with Naga communities through consultation and mutual respect.

It further stated that peace in the region can only be sustained through recognition of historical and customary realities rather than unilateral actions.

Condemning the alleged incident, NSWON called for a transparent and impartial inquiry and demanded accountability for any excesses that may have occurred.

The organisation also urged the Assam Rifles to respect customary jurisdiction and established local protocols and to avoid actions that could further escalate tensions.

Expressing solidarity with the Tangkhul women involved in the protest, NSWON said it stands with those seeking justice through peaceful and democratic means and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the dignity, humanity, and political rights of the Naga people.

No response from the Assam Rifles was available at the time of filing this report.
