Nagaland University, Lumami Campus, held a solemn condolence programme on April 9 to pay tribute to late Prof. A. Lanunungsang Ao, who had retired as a professor from the Department of Sociology. The programme was chaired by Mr. Kahoshe Sumi, DR (GAD), and featured a short speech by Prof. M.K. Sinha, Dean, School of Social Sciences, Nagaland University. A formal condolence message was read out by Dr. Abemo, Registrar of Nagaland University, highlighting Prof. Ao’s invaluable contributions to the university.
The Nagaland University Teachers’ Association (Lumami) also convened a separate condolence meeting, fondly remembering Prof. Ao as one of the founding members of the Lumami Campus. Paying rich tributes, the association placed on record his numerous contributions towards the development of the university and acknowledged his pivotal role in its early growth and academic evolution.
The Department of Sociology, which Prof. Ao founded in 1997, organized its own tribute to honor his legacy. Faculty members, staff, postgraduate students, and research scholars gathered to reflect on his immense contributions to the field of Sociology and to higher education in Nagaland. Speakers at the event recalled how, through his vision, dedication, and tireless efforts, Prof Ao nurtured the department and played a vital role in strengthening Nagaland University.
Chairing the department’s condolence meeting, Dr Pitheli K Jimo, Assistant Professor, spoke of Prof Ao’s strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to academic excellence. Prof Toshimenla Jamir, Head of the Department and Prof Ao’s first PhD scholar at Nagaland University, shared personal memories of her mentor, describing his enthusiasm for teaching and research. She also highlighted the values he instilled in the academic community — hard work, diligence, and teamwork.
“He led by example and left behind a good legacy that we will forever cherish,” Prof Jamir said, urging faculty, staff, and students to carry forward the vision Prof. Ao had for the department and the university at large.
AKM mourns
The Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) has expressed deep sorrow over the sudden demise of Prof A Lanunungsang Ao, a renowned sociologist, former Pro Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, Meriema Campus, and former Chairman of the Ao Senden Literature Board (ASLB).
In a condolence message, the AKM described Prof Ao as a beloved leader, dedicated academician, and a humble and patriotic figure whose multitude of qualities left a lasting impact on the community. The Conference noted that his untimely passing has created a significant vacuum, particularly for the younger generation, who looked up to him as a noble guide and a steadfast pillar of society.
“We are at a loss for words and lament his untimely demise,” the AKM stated, conveying heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. The organization also offered prayers for strength and comfort for the family during this time of grief.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the AKM added, honoring the memory of Prof Ao and his invaluable contributions to both academia and the community.
