Nagaland University (NU) has launched a two-day training programme on indigenous cuisines of Nagaland, organized by the Committee for Indigenous Traditional Knowledge (ITK). The event commenced with an inaugural ceremony graced by Prof. J.K. Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor of NU, as the Chief Guest.

Chaired by Dr. Neizo Puro, the ceremony began with a welcome address by Prof. Athungo Ovung from the Department of Sociology. Prof. Ovung underscored the significance of documenting indigenous knowledge systems to ensure their preservation across generations. He expressed optimism that the expertise of culinary specialists, including Prof. Visakhonu Hibo, Principal of Japfü Christian College, and her colleagues, would equip trainees with valuable skills. He also provided an overview of the initiative to integrate ITK into Nagaland University.

Prof. Visakhonu Hibo, the resource person, delivered an insightful lecture on Naga cuisines, enriched with video clippings for an immersive experience. She shared her success in integrating traditional culinary knowledge into skill-enhancement courses at Japfü Christian College, noting the positive response from students in rediscovering Naga flavors. She also stressed the need for self-sufficiency and sustainability, advocating for the scientific study and community preservation of locally available plants and herbs with medicinal properties.

In his address, Prof. Patnaik emphasized the importance of preserving indigenous traditional knowledge, announcing plans to integrate ITK under the Indigenous Knowledge System (IKS) Centre, which is currently in development. He expressed confidence that this initiative would mark a significant milestone for Nagaland University, potentially leading to the establishment of a dedicated department for indigenous studies covering cuisine, languages, and traditional medicine.

The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Peter Ki, PRO, Nagaland University. The event saw participation from deans, HoDs, faculty, officers, research scholars, and students. A total of 19 participants, including research scholars, postgraduate students, and staff members, will undergo hands-on training from culinary experts during the programme from March 17-18, 2025.
