Nagaland University (NU) inaugurated its new International Student and International Research Scholars Hostels at Lumami on Monday, adding much-needed accommodation facilities for the campus.

The Rs. 4.76 crore project, funded by the North Eastern Council (NEC), comprises two identical buildings with a combined capacity of 40 students. Construction began in June 2021 and was completed in December 2024.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by NEC Secretary Satinder Kumar Bhalla as chief guest and NEC Planning Adviser Som Kamei as special guest, along with Vice-Chancellor Prof. J.K. Patnaik, Registrar Dr Abemo, Finance Officer N Albert Khizho, and other university officials. A traditional welcome song, project presentation, prayer, ribbon-cutting, and plaque unveiling marked the occasion.

Registrar Dr Abemo described the event as a “great day for the University,” noting the NEC Secretary’s first visit to the Lumami campus. He thanked NEC for past support while requesting further assistance for futsal grounds and hostels to meet growing student needs.

Vice-Chancellor Patnaik highlighted the shortage of hostels, announcing plans to construct 20 more buildings in the next two years. He also cited academic and research achievements, including four faculty members ranked among the world’s top 2% scientists in the Stanford listings and the filing of over 150 patents.

Chief Guest Bhalla congratulated the university for its progress, calling the patent achievement “not a joke,” and advised diversifying funding sources through alumni and the private sector. Special Guest Kamei endorsed this view, stressing the role of CSR and private investment in higher education.

The program concluded with an interaction between NEC officials and the university faculty.
