Nagaland University’s Department of Political Science organized the Yuvamanthan Youth Parliament under the aegis of Viksit Bharat @ 2047, with the theme “Bridging Theory to Practice, Empowering Youth with Skills.” The event was held at I Ihoshe Kinimi Hall on October 28, 2024.
The Chief Guest for the inaugural session was Prof Jagadish K. Patnaik, Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University. Prof Patnaik discussed the Indian parliamentary system and its pivotal role in empowering youth. He asserted that, influenced by Western interpretations of democracy, India has long overlooked the essence of its socio-political dimensions and historical roots. He stated, “The system of Panchayat that we cherish even today, where interrogation and discourse are considered essential elements of social life, is deeply entrenched in our social foundations. Democracy, left to itself, may become mobocracy, but when meritocracy exercises reason and logic for the betterment of society, democracy thrives.”
Prof Patnaik emphasized the slogan “think global, act local,” adding that institutions can be strengthened by adhering to the essence of India’s civilizational discourse—whether socio-economic or political—by reiterating indigenous elements. He further urged everyone to assert their rights and uphold institutions that ensure freedom, dignity, integrity, honesty, and empowerment.
Earlier, the welcome and opening remarks were delivered by Prof Moamenla Amer, Head of the Department of Political Science. She highlighted the issue that while universities in India produce large numbers of graduates, many remain unemployed due to a lack of required skills. She explained that there is a focus on how young people can participate in democracy, adding that the Youth Parliament was organized by Nagaland University to enhance students’ skills and provide real-life exposure to discussion, debate, and policymaking.
The program was chaired by Dr. Deepak Bhaskar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and Faculty Coordinator for Yuvamanthan. The inaugural session was followed by three technical sessions, concluding with a valedictory session. The program was attended by Heads of Departments, faculty, officers, administrative staff, and students.
