The Ongpangkong Students’ Conference (OKM) has issued a press statement expressing serious concern over the “deplorable road conditions” from Rotary Junction to IOC in Mokokchung town.
According to the OKM, a representation was served to the Commissioner and Secretary, Urban Development Department on March 24, 2025, “stating our urgent need for critical repairs to the Rotary Junction to IOC road in Mokokchung along with a request for an immediate response within 15 days.”
In response, the concerned department, in a letter dated April 7, 2025, informed that “the proposed roadwork has been included in the list of Projects under Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) 2024-2025-PART-1 United Natural Disaster as per Administrative approval letter No: UDD/17-SSAS/02-CI/2022.”
However, OKM pointed out that despite their demand for a “concrete time-bound action plan” in the March 24 representation (Application No: OKM/Gen.Secy/Info/2025-07), the information received on April 7 “failed to give any assurance on the commencement of the complete critical repair” of the road.
On April 9, 2025, the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung convened a joint meeting at the DC Office, attended by officials of the Urban Development Department, Mokokchung, and OKM representatives. During the meeting, the officials stated that “it takes 30-45 days to complete all the departmental and administrative procedures” to commence the work.
In the press statement, OKM emphasized that “the Commissioner and Secretary, Urban Development Department should take this matter seriously.” They further asserted that “the commencement of critical repair on this vital road segment should start within 30-45 days as assured by the Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung and the Urban Department, Mokokchung.”
OKM also warned that “failure to address this issue within the stipulated time frame will compel us to initiate various means of agitation to ensure that the voices of our people are heard.”
