One-day training on vermicomposting and waste management held at Tuli College

A one-day training programme on vermicomposting and waste management was successfully conducted at Tuli College under the theme “Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future.” The programme was organised by the Tuli Forest Range, Mokokchung Forest Division in collaboration with the Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI), Jorhat.

The training witnessed active participation from a diverse group, including forest personnel, members of the Tuli Town Council, church representatives, farmers, students, faculty of Tuli College, and members of the local community.

The keynote address was delivered by Moamongba, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF), Tuli Forest Range. He highlighted the importance of vermicomposting, sustainable waste management, and eco-friendly agricultural practices. He emphasised that the initiative aimed not only to impart technical knowledge but also to empower individuals to contribute towards healthier soil, cleaner surroundings, and a greener future. The event was organised in commemoration of World Environment Day 2026, underscoring the need for collective environmental responsibility.

The resource person, R. Bhattacharya, Senior Technical Scientist from RFRI, Jorhat, delivered comprehensive sessions on vermicomposting and waste management. He explained the crucial role of earthworms in converting organic waste into nutrient-rich compost and elaborated on the materials and methods required for effective composting. He also highlighted the adverse effects of excessive use of chemical fertilisers.

A practical demonstration session covered key aspects such as compost bed preparation, layering of organic materials, moisture management, protection of earthworms, and harvesting techniques. Participants were also trained on innovative approaches such as the Bokashi method, cost-effective models for vermicomposting structures using locally available materialsand stressed on its potential as a viable source of income for farmers.The programme concluded on a positive note with an interactive session and encouraging feedback from participants.
