Padma Shri awardee Neihunuo Sorhie welcomed in Dimapur

Dimapur, 26 March (MTNews): Padma Shri awardee and weaver from Nagaland, Neihunuo Sorhie arrived Dimapur today. She was received at Dimapur airport by her brother Dr. Keneiteiso Sorhie, nieces, nephews, well-wishers and representatives from Sorhienuomia clan.

Sorhie is known for her original artworks in traditional weaving, she is on a mission to teach disappearing art to the next generation.

 

Neihunuo Sorhie was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award for her contribution to the field of arts by President Droupadi Murmu in Delhi.

 

Speaking to media on her arrival, Neihunuo said she learned the art from her mother at the age of four and has been weaving till date. Lamenting that today’s younger generation are not keen to learn the art, she encouraged them to be inquisitive to learn and uphold the traditional way of living.

 

She thanked the Government of India for recognizing her art.

 

She is a recipient of the National Handloom Awards twice in 2007 and 2022 for her artworks in handicrafts, the Sant Kabir Award in 2018; the Balipara Foundation Naturenomics Assam Award, 2014 and the State Awards to Master craftsmen from the Government of Nagaland in 2001.
