In a landmark event for Nagaland football, the player auction for the 2nd Edition of the Peren District Football League (PDFL) 2024 took place on the evening of July 27, 2024, at the Ball Park in Jalukie Town. This pioneering initiative by the Peren District Football Association (PDFA) saw participation from eight district teams, each allotted a purse of Rs. 70,000.
This year’s PDFL, organized by the New Jalukie Super League (NSL) group under the aegis of PDFA, is scheduled to run from August 17 to September 7, 2024, at the New Jalukie Village Football Ground. With 36 players listed, the auction aimed to promote professionalism and provide lucrative opportunities for local talent who have represented the Peren district team over the past three years.
The crowd was also treated to a performance by district-renowned musician Kenlumyile, whose lively tunes and engaging stage presence added a festive atmosphere to the event, an update received here said.
Star bids and top players
The highlight of the evening was Nagaland star midfielder and NSF Trophy 2023 Player of the Tournament, Winamthiu Ringdi, who fetched the highest bid of Rs. 41,000 from the debutante club Nchangram Lun FC. This record-breaking bid set the tone for a competitive auction. Close on his heels were Khiuwangbo of Jalukie Falcons FC and the promising young midfielder Irabeubo of Kingdom Stewards FC, each commanding Rs. 39,000, becoming the second most expensive players of the night.
Other prominent names that drew significant attention included defender Gaijangam, midfielders Lamsanggin and Kawililakbou (also known as Alapou), international forward Ratobe, and star winger Kenumdi.
Team strategies and spending
Jalukie Falcons FC and Benreu FC emerged as the top spenders, each utilizing Rs. 69,000 of their allocated budgets. Jalukie Falcons FC secured four players, while Benreu FC bolstered their squad with three key acquisitions. The auction saw a total expenditure of Rs. 4.67 lakh as 29 players found their new teams, setting the stage for an exciting and competitive season ahead.

PDFA’s introduction of the player auction system marks a significant step towards professionalizing district-level football in Nagaland.
