The District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC), Peren, under the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), observed World No Tobacco Day on 31st May 2025 at Baptist Higher Secondary School, Jalukie B. The event was held under the theme “Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco & Nicotine Products.”
Apeuna Iheilung, President of Zeliangrong Mipui Organisation, graced the occasion as the Special Guest. In her address to the students, she said that they are the architects of their own lives. While parents play a role in shaping their children, it is ultimately the students who must steer their own paths and not allow tobacco to take control. She urged both students and the community to stay away from substances that harm health and the environment. She encouraged participants to completely avoid the use of tobacco and to become living examples by not indulging in tobacco products.
Dr. Aoyanger, District Nodal Officer (DNO), NTCP Peren, speaking on the theme, emphasized that avoiding combustible tobacco products should be a top priority. He stated that the only way to eliminate tobacco-related harm is to not use such products at all. Motivating the students, he said, “We cannot change our past, but we can change our present.” Comparing tobacco to poison, he urged the participants to be champions of a tobacco-free life and to inspire future generations to choose a bright path over dark temptations.
Seventeen schools in Peren district were certified and declared as Tobacco-Free Schools and were presented with the Certificate of Declared Tobacco-Free School by the Guest of Honour. An essay and painting competition was also conducted, with winners awarded. A pledge was taken, and free IEC materials were distributed.
