A two-day Peren District Level Farmers Training on the theme ”From Traditional to Scientific Fish Farming Practices & an Overview of Giant Freshwater Prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) Farming for Sustainable Aquaculture” was held at Rehangki Conference Hall near Traffic Point, Jalukie Town on the 5 and 6 May, 2025.

The training was organized by the Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Peren, under the initiative of the Fish Farmers Interest Groups (FIG) Peren, in association with the Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, with Avijit Kumar Kolay, Proprietor of Kumar’s Hatchery, Kolkata, West Bengal, as the expert resource person.

During the technical session, Avijit Kumar Kolay emphasized that the method of rearing fish is crucial for successful fish farming as it directly impacts fish health. He explained that effective fish farming should involve a combination of preventive measures such as proper water quality, a balanced diet, and sanitation.

He further stated, ”A fish hatchery is a facility where fish eggs are hatched and reared through their early life stages.”

Presenting the keynote address during the inaugural program, District Fishery Officer & Project Director of ATMA, C Dory Yanthan, encouraged fish farmers to take time to learn and apply the benefits of fish rearing. She also urged farmers to rear more local fish for the market and stated that the training was funded by ATMA.

Rev Kuzierang Thou invoked God’s blessings for the training, while Deputy Project Director of ATMA, Kumui Bring, delivered the welcome address.
