The Phek Students’ Union (PSU) has expressed deep concern over a raid conducted by the Assam Rifles on the evening of 12 March 2026, during which the Union’s General Secretary was publicly accused of being associated with a faction, according to a statement issued by the organization.
The PSU described the incident as deeply disturbing, stating that it not only hurt the individual concerned but also undermined the dignity of the Union and the citizens of Phek.
The statement emphasized that prior to the posting of the present battalion, relations between the local population, organizations, and security forces had been cordial, respectful, and peaceful, and such incidents had not occurred in the past.
“The use of force and the manner in which the operation was carried out in public has disturbed the peaceful coexistence of the people of Phek Village,” the Union said. It added that the actions created unnecessary fear among law-abiding citizens, regardless of age or gender.
The PSU also called the enforcement of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Phek District unnecessary, highlighting that the district has remained peaceful since the ceasefire agreement between factions and the Government of India. The Union argued that Phek is widely known for its honesty, hospitality, and peaceful nature, and continued application of AFSPA could threaten public trust and the relationship between civilians and the armed forces.

The Union urged the Government of India to reconsider and withdraw AFSPA from Phek District, and called on authorities to take appropriate action to restore public confidence, maintain peace, and uphold the dignity of Phek citizens.
The statement was issued and signed by Sherakho Venuh, President, and Rukutho Keyho, Assistant General Secretary of the Phek Students’ Union.
