The Phom Union Mokokchung celebrated Phom Monyiu 2022 at Town hall, Mokokchung on Saturday.
Special guest during the occasion, I. Mangko Jamir, Legal Advisor, Ao Senden, said that “Love, truth, benevolence and kindness should always be there among all tribal hohos in the town.”
As a lawyer, he also asserted that apart from keeping customs and traditions alive, “We should revoke those customs which are against the constitution.”
President of ENPUM; President, Sumi Community Mokokchung and President, Konyak Union Mokokchung delivered short speeches while Phomla Hoichem, Mokokchung presented a folk dance and Chang Union Mokokchung presented a special folk song.
Phom Monyiu festival is celebrated for 6 days beginning from 1st to 6th April every year. The spring festival is normally observed to invoke God’s blessings to have a bountiful harvest and is observed after the sowing of paddy is done in the paddy fields.
Monyiu also marks the end of winter and the onset of the monsoon season. Monyiu is also the time when young boys and girls would be taught the customary practices, folk songs and dances.
Monyiu is also the time when sisters and daughters who are married are reminded that they are still honoured and cared for, and they would be invited to their parents’ or brothers’ house to celebrate the feast together.
