The 73rd Phom Day—also known as Peace Day—was observed with solemn reverence and renewed commitment to the legacy of peace on June 6, 2025, at the public ground in Longleng under the theme “Peace within, Peace beyond.” The day marks the historic end of the headhunting era in the Phom area and the dawn of peace and harmony among the Phom community.

The celebration was graced by MLA B Bangtick Phom as the Special Guest, while the Deputy Commissioner of Longleng, W Manpai Phom, NCS, attended as Guest of Honor. The day began with the unfurling of the Phom Day flag, followed by the singing of the Phom Day Anthem and a ceremonial salute to parade contingents comprising the 12th IR Chongtok band party, local schools, Scouts and Guides, and students of Yingli College.

The Special Guest, MLA B Bangtick Phom, said that the present generation is “truly fortunate to enjoy the fruits of peace, nurtured by the visionary leadership of the past.” He reminded the gathering that Phom Day is “not just a celebration but a reminder of the responsibility we carry to uphold and nurture peace.”

He recounted the story of Lt Hamnyei (Head Dobashi), Lt Yongtau (2nd Dobashi), and Lt Anyak, who—along with village elders—”took a bold stand for peace over violence, despite great personal risk.” Their message, he said, was clear: ”Violence offers no lasting gain, while peace secures a future for all.”

However, the MLA raised concerns about “misunderstandings, internal conflicts, and disunity” that still persist. He said issues like land disputes and boundary disagreements continue to hinder progress. “The celebration will hold little significance unless the community embraces forgiveness, reconciliation, and a genuine effort to resolve these lingering issues,” he said, urging individuals to “take the first step—whether by returning what is not rightfully theirs or by extending forgiveness.”

Guest of Honor W Manpai Phom, in his address, stressed on “progressive peacekeeping” and urged the people to “move forward in step with the evolving demands of a rapidly changing world.” He said the community must “encourage development that is sustainable and inclusive” and commit to supporting students, opposing all forms of human violence, and promoting women’s empowerment. “If we truly embrace these values, peace will follow,” he stated.

ASP Longleng, H. Hiatwa Irulu, NPS, in his solitary message, praised the Phom People Council (PPC) and said, “Peace is not just the absence of violence, but it fosters empathy, cooperation, and understanding.” He said the Phom people’s commitment to peace is commendable and encouraged the community to continue resolving conflicts peacefully “for the sake of future generations.”

Messages were also delivered by PPC President YB Angam Phom and Phom Day Commission Convenor Nuklu Phom, while a musical piece titled ”A Call for Peace” was presented by Bhütaü Phom, and a peace folk fusion by Cross Road Ministry. A play was performed by Vision Vale School, Longleng.

The Phom Students’ Conference presented the NI Jamir and Phom Day Awards to: SP Longleng; Yanger Jamir; Hennyukonlen Phom; B Bonglen Phom; T Alen Nyaim; Band Bu-oo-Li; M Nganshung; Wanyau Phom; Jatli H Mongshet; L Chuchong Noklang; Ailung P Phom; and Lengthai E Phom

Earlier, the invocation was offered by Rev. Chingkon, Pastor, Oukshok Baptist Church. The Phom Day Pledge was led by Rev. H. Mongngoi, Associate Pastor, LTBC. The welcome address was delivered by A. Ainyu Phom, President of Phomla Hoichem, and the programme was compered by M. Lithei and Hamlog Phom.

Cultural dances were performed by Yachem male cultural troupe and Yongnyah female troupe, while friendly games promoting peace included men’s football matches (PPC Executive vs Village Union Presidents, DC XI vs SP XI, and Officers’ Club vs 12 IR Chongtok) and women’s volleyball (Phomla Hoichem vs 11 Wards Nyudhu, and Women Officers vs Laa Union Presidents).
