The second phase of the indefinite “aggressive agitation” by the Zeliangrong Youth Organisation, Nagaland (ZYON), Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Nagaland (ZSUN), and Zeliangrong Mipui Organisation (ZMO) entered its third day on Thursday in Peren district, disrupting government offices and blocking National Highway-129 (A).
The protest is in response to the April 7 Pimla murder case, in which a woman’s body was discovered between Mhaikam and Pimla villages. The groups have alleged the “failure of the state government and law enforcement agencies to ensure justice” and demanded that “the culprits be named and the forensic report released before any further dialogue takes place.”
Despite an appeal by the Nagaland Government on August 20 urging the organisations to withdraw the bandh and assuring that “the State is taking active measures to ensure justice in the Pimla murder case,” the agitation continued.
In an official communiqué, Commissioner of Nagaland Gregory Thejawelie IAS informed the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Peren that the Principal Sessions Judge, Dimapur, has cancelled the bail granted earlier to the accused persons in connection with Pimla murder case (No. G.R 152/2025) under sections 103(1)/118(1)(2) BNS. The order was passed on August 20, 2025. The Commissioner also noted that the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, has written to the Director General of Police, Nagaland, requesting the Director of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Kamrup, Assam, to expedite the expert examination process.
“You are therefore requested to convene a meeting with the CSOs and apprise them of the latest development and request them to call off the indefinite bandh. It may also be appraised to them that the State Government is sincerely pursuing the matter and taking necessary steps so that justice is delivered at the earliest,” the Commissioner’s letter stated.
However, when the DC convened a meeting to discuss the unrest, no representatives from the civil society organisations (CSOs) attended, reaffirming their stance not to engage until concrete action is taken.
In line with their August 14 press conference in Dimapur, the organisations have enforced a ban on government vehicles and interstate transport along NH-129 (A), in addition to closing government offices. According to ZYON president R John Zeliang, “26 vehicles have been confiscated so far, including two government-registered vehicles, while the rest were transport carriers along NH-129 (A),” reported Eastern Mirror.
