Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting at his residence on Sunday with key members of India’s defense establishment. The meeting included Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and the tri-services chiefs. The discussion took place amid a fragile calm on the India-Pakistan border, where no new ceasefire violations had been reported.
The ceasefire, initially announced by US President Donald Trump on Saturday, was expected to lead to a cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan. Both nations reportedly reached an understanding to halt military actions. However, despite Pakistan’s commitment to the ceasefire, it violated the agreement by engaging in military provocations, including drone and missile strikes in Indian territory. In response, India retaliated strongly, leading to Pakistan halting its drone and missile activity.
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated India’s uncompromising stance against terrorism in all forms, highlighting the country’s determination to continue its fight against terrorism. Pakistan’s violation of the ceasefire prompted India to issue a stern warning, emphasizing that the armed forces had been instructed to deal decisively with any further violations along the International Border and Line of Control (LoC).
In a late-night press briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized that India had taken the violations seriously, calling on Pakistan to address the situation responsibly. Pakistan, on the other hand, reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif describing it as a potential “new beginning” for resolving regional issues and fostering peace and stability.
“Ceasefire first announced by US President”: Rahul Gandhi writes to PM, urges special Parliament session
A day after the Centre announced a ceasefire agreement with Pakistan, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to call a special session of Parliament to discuss the ceasefire and Operation Sindoor.
Gandhi said that US President Donald Trump first announced the ceasefire and noted the importance of addressing the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and the ceasefire agreement in Parliament.
“Dear Prime Minister, I reiterate the unanimous request of the Opposition to convene a special session of Parliament immediately.
It is crucial for the people and their representatives to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor and today’s ceasefire, first announced by US President Trump. This will also be an opportunity to demonstrate our collective resolve to meet the challenges ahead. I trust that you will consider this demand seriously and swiftly,” Gandhi wrote.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, also supported the request for a special session, referring to previous letters sent in April. Kharge reiterated the unanimous request from all opposition parties to discuss the recent developments, including the ceasefire announcements from both India and Pakistan.
The Indian government had previously called an all-party meeting following the Pahalgam terror attack and subsequent airstrikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir under Operation Sindoor. However, Prime Minister Modi had not attended these meetings, though the opposition expressed full support for any retaliatory actions against the terrorists responsible for the attack, which claimed 26 innocent lives.
In a surprising turn of events, US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between India and Pakistan after intensive talks mediated by the US. The next to announce the ceasefire was US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
About half an hour after the US announcement, the ceasefire was confirmed by India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, which took effect on Saturday at 5:00 pm IST. Pakistan leaders, including its Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, took to social media to announce the ceasefire and thanked US President Donald Trump. India’s response, however, did not mention the US role or detailed the terms based on which the ceasefire was agreed upon.
This morning, US President Trump offered to work with the two neighbours to find a solution to the Kashmir issue. New Delhi has always stressed that Kashmir is an integral part of India and opposed third-party mediation.
An Indian government response to the Trump offer is awaited.
