Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday In an exclusive interview with The Assam Tribune in his official residence said that the ground situation in Manipur had seen a marked improvement and that it was possible because of the timely intervention by the Centre and efforts of the state government, led by CM N Biren Singh. However, the Congress hit out at PM Modi for his statements on Manipur and termed it as “disgraceful and shameless.”

However, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and AICC spokesperson Dr Shama Mohamed hit out at the PM for his remarks on Manipur.

“It is disgraceful and shameless for the BJP to claim that the PM has saved Manipur. Hundreds of people have been killed, and lakhs displaced,” Ramesh posted on X, adding that an atmosphere of fear and intimidation prevails, and communities are living apart.

“The PM has not made a visit to the state in 11 months, nor has he spoken about it, except for three minutes. He has not even met the Chief Minister or MLAs or MPs from the state,” he added. Ramesh alleged that the violence was the result of the “politics of division and polarization that the BJP excels in.”

Mohamed also took to X to criticize the prime minister. “It has been a year since the violence started in Manipur, yet the PM hasn’t found a single day to go visit the state,” she posted.

“When videos of women being paraded naked came out, his govt’s first reaction was to ban the internet so that the rest of India is kept in the dark. The Centre has completely abandoned Manipur!” she added.

PM Modi, speaking to The Assam Tribune, also spoke about the ongoing relief and rehabilitation work in the strife-torn Manipur and said that several remedial measures are being taken to promote calm and peace in the region.

“The process of relief and rehabilitation is ongoing. Remedial measures include the financial package for relief and rehabilitation of people living in shelter camps in the state,” the PM told the highest circulated English daily in NE India.

PM Modi told the Assam Tribune that he had already spoken about the Manipur issue in the Parliament and that the government has deployed its best resources and administrative machinery to resolve the conflict.

He further said, “Home Minister stayed in Manipur while the conflict was at its peak, holding 15-plus meetings with various stakeholders to help resolve the conflict. The Central government has been consistently extending its support, as required by the state government.”

Since the violence broke out in Manipur on 3 May 2023, the opposition parties have been mounting fierce attacks on the Centre in the Parliament and outside of it for not sacking Biren Singh and his government and raising concerns about the Prime Minister’s absence from Manipur.

Manipur plunged into turmoil in May last year when ethnic clashes broke out in the state after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. As the Meitei organized counter-protests and blockades, clashes spread across Manipur. According to government figures, 175 people have been killed in the violence and hundreds injured in the clashes.

  1. I’m impressed, I need to say. Really rarely do I encounter a weblog that’s each educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you’ve gotten hit the nail on the head. Your thought is outstanding; the difficulty is something that not enough people are speaking intelligently about. I am very pleased that I stumbled across this in my search for something referring to this.
